Thousands stay away from Angolan elections

LUANDA, Angola (AP) ? Thousands stayed away from polling stations in Luanda and thousands more were unable to vote Friday in Angola's second election in 20 years which is expected to give an easy victory to the ruling party, despite accusations of corruption and mismanagement of the country's oil and diamond riches.

Office cleaner Amalia Masungo said she chose not to vote because "they (politicians) are all bad men and I don't think my vote will make any difference."

The government was committing "the most sophisticated fraud" by excluding local election observers from critical civil society organizations and by confusing voters with a lack of information, charged election observer Elias Isaac of the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa.

"Thousands of people are unable to vote," he told The Associated Press. "The whole system was created to exclude people rather than including as many as possible."

Earlier Friday, voters banged at the gate to one polling station which remained closed 90 minutes after voting was to start. Electoral official Delfina Manuel explained that there was no electricity and it had been too dark inside to open earlier.

The lines that grew because stations opened late quickly disappeared. The usually boisterous and noisy seaside city was abnormally quiet.

Two hours before polls were to close, two stations reported about half the registered voters had cast ballots. In 2008 elections, 87 percent of voters participated. One polling agent suggested there might be a last-minute rush of voters before polls close at 7 pm (1800 GMT).

Friday's vote was largely seen as a test of the popularity of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who has ruled for 33 years without being directly elected. Presidential elections were constantly postponed until last year, when the government changed the constitution so that the leader of the party with the most votes becomes president.

Voters are to elect 220 legislators from nine parties and coalitions. Preliminary results are expected by Saturday, ANGOP state news agency said.

Victory for the ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola , or MPLA, would give dos Santos another five-year term.

The Web site of an underground youth movement that has been protesting for a change of government reported people were protesting at one Luanda station because their names had been transferred to distant provinces and "many are returning to their houses without any possibility to vote."

Opposition parties had objected that the National Elections Commission did not publish the electoral roll. The commission said it had sent people information by SMS messages to mobile phones and had published the information on the Internet.

Isaac estimated that less than 10 percent have access to the Internet in a country where more than a third of the population is illiterate.

New on the election scene is the Broad Convergence for Angola's Salvation, a coalition created in April which unites former key opposition figure Abel Chivukuvuku and Andre Gaspar Mendes de Carvalho, a former general in dos Santos' army and the son of one of Angola's most famous nationalists. Chivukuvuku had belonged to UNITA, the biggest opposition party, which won 10 percent of votes and 16 seats in the 2008 election.

Calling itself "the leader of change," the new coalition is expected to come in third place with promises to fight corruption. Many young people appeared to be voting for the new coalition.

"Every vote will make a difference. We have to believe in the electoral process," Braulio Silva, a 26-year-old who works for a logistics company, said as he waited in a line early Friday.

Dos Santos' party holds 191 national assembly seats after it won 2008 elections in a landslide. UNITA is expected to pick up a few more votes from people who complain about a lack of democracy and an unequal spread of wealth.

A 32-year-old IT engineer, Jose Tomas, said he was pleased by the election process.

"I'm so proud of my country right now. I wish all those foreigners who 'fled' to Europe in packed planes right before the elections could see this, that we're not a group of savages killing each other," said Tomas. "Angola is showing that it CAN organize itself if it wants to."

Tomas expected that the MPLA would win in part because voters are used to the party.

"You see all those old mommas voting?" he said of a group of women wearing traditional cloth wraps. "The MPLA for them is like a cell phone: As long as it doesn't break or get stolen, they'll never change brand."

The MPLA has presided over the resurgence of Luanda, a once-decrepit seaside town that has turned into a building construction site. Human rights officials complain that poor Angolans have been forced from their downtown homes to distant suburbs with no electricity, water or transport, to make way for luxury high-rise apartment buildings.

Both UNITA and the coalition have complained of the uneven playing field in the election and the possibilities for fraud. Opposition parties are particularly concerned that votes will not be counted until they reach the National Electoral Commission in Luanda. UNITA leader Isaias Samakuva said he has confirmed that soldiers in the Military Affairs Cabinet that reports directly to the president's office have been installed there as logistical supervisors. The same thing happened in 2008 when the military was involved in transportation, distribution and handling of ballots, ballots boxes and minutes for election results, according to Chatham House, the London-based independent policy institute.

Dos Santos' party also has a near-monopoly on the national media. It has emphasized the government's reconstruction of the country after the civil war, the president's role as an "architect of peace," improved democracy, housing, educational, health and entrepreneurial projects and job creation.

Still, unemployment stands officially at 26 percent and is much higher among young people.

This southern African nation was a Cold War battlefield for 27 years, with dos Santos' MPLA backed by Cuban soldiers and a Soviet war chest, pitted against UNITA, which was backed by apartheid South Africa and the United States. Half a million people died in the war, more than 4 million ? a third of the population ? was displaced and much infrastructure was destroyed.

Since the war ended in 2002, Angola has dominated the list of the world's fastest growing economies and is sub-Saharan Africa's second-largest oil producer, after Nigeria. Oil-backed credit lines from China ? Angola is China's No. 1 oil supplier and its second biggest importer is the United States ? have fueled a building boom of houses, hospitals, schools, roads and bridges. Average life expectancy went up from 45 in 2002 to 51 in 2011.

But 87 percent of urban Angolans live in shanty towns, often with no access to clean water, according to UNICEF, and more than a third of Angolans live below the poverty line.

How to Show | Southland Property Management

If you work in real estate, you should know that showing a property is more than just showing up for the appointment. Prep is necessary as is a positive, diligent attitude. Following, some helpful advice to prepare for showing.

  • Select the properties. Many buyers have access to lists, and recommendations from their realtors. Suggest homes as well.
  • Make sure the property is available, and ask if it has offers. You can do this by printing out the MLS listing the buyer wants to see. Email the agents early in the morning. If you don?t hear from them soon, give them a call. Give a second call if necessary. This saves a lot of wasted time.
  • Don?t play games with the showing order. Show the homes in the order that is easier to get to, not the order you think will get a sale. Some homes only have certain showing times which means there might be some excess navigation, but keep it to a minimum. It is frustrating for everyone involved to have to drive in circles, and it makes for distrust. So plan the easiest route.
  • Schedule the appointments.

Many suspected ineligible CO voters US citizens

DENVER (AP) ? Nearly a third of people whose citizenship and right to vote were questioned by Colorado's secretary of state are actually U.S. citizens, election officials said Wednesday, prompting Democrats to question the motives behind the effort to clean up voting rolls as a tightly contested presidential election approaches.

Earlier this month, Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler sent letters to nearly 4,000 people questioning their citizenship as part of a plan to have them voluntarily withdraw or confirm their eligibility to vote.

State officials were able to run 1,400 of those names through a federal immigration database and found that more than 1,200 were U.S. citizens. So far, they've found none who are non-citizens and registered to vote.

Martha Tierney, an attorney for the Colorado Democratic Party, told election officials during a meeting Wednesday that they were wasting their time on a small group of voters instead of focusing on ensuring a fair and accurate fall election.

"This is a witch hunt and you should be embarrassed that you're going down this road," she said.

Gessler's office plans to release updated figures on Thursday detailing how many of the 4,000 people responded directly to affirm their citizenship or withdraw their voter registration. He said no further action will be taken involving people who did not respond to the letters.

Democrats have criticized the effort to correct the voting rolls and said it could disenfranchise legal voters or make it difficult to exercise their right to vote. More than three-quarters of the letters went to Democrats and independent voters.

Gessler denies any political motivation and insists his goal is to maintain accurate voter rolls. His office said it did not look at party registration when sending the letters.

Gessler spokesman Rich Coolidge said that ensuring only eligible voters cast ballots is an important component of running a successful election.

"As the state's chief election official, he is obligated to make sure that only eligible voters are casting ballots," Coolidge said before the hearing. "We identified a vulnerability in the system, we identified people who exploited, or accidentally exploited that vulnerability, and we're going to shut down that loophole."

Still, critics have questioned Gessler's political motivations in a year where both major parties see Colorado as key to winning the presidential election. Control of the state Legislature and competitive congressional races are also at stake.

Across the country Republicans have aggressively pursued initiatives to verify voters' citizenship, particularly in swing states, much to the ire of Democrats who worry that key parts of their base ? Latinos and seniors ? are likely to be disenfranchised.

Election chiefs in Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico and Ohio ? all expected to be competitive in November ? joined Colorado and other states asking the federal government for access to the database to verify citizenship. Colorado got access to the database last week.

Samantha Meiring, 37, a Colorado voter whose status was questioned, waved a letter as she told election officials Wednesday that she was speaking "as an immigrant and U.S. citizen who got a lovely little letter in the mail."

"I find it absolutely ridiculous that a U.S. citizen is being asked to jump through additional hoops to exercise a right to vote," said the registered Democrat, a South African immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2010. "I think you're chasing people that don't need to be chased."

A total of 1,566 letters went to Democrats and 1,794 went to unaffiliated voters. Another 486 letters were sent to Republicans.

Using information from the department of motor vehicles, Gessler identified people who once presented documents showing they were not citizens, such as a green card, when applying for a driver's license. It's unclear whether those people registered to vote by accident while getting a driver's license or when approached by someone as part of registration drive.

Gessler's office provided The Associated Press with the party affiliation of people who received the letters but denied a request to see their names, citing an ongoing investigation.

Democrats and voting advocacy groups said Gessler has shown no proof of widespread fraud and overreached by sending the letters.

"They basically sent out the functional equivalent of an email blast," said Mark Grueskin, an attorney who represents Democrats on election issues.

The American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado said at least 25 eligible voters who got the letters have contacted the organization and the number is growing.

Democrats do not want Gessler to hold hearings for the fewer than 200 remaining people whose citizenship status hasn't been verified on the federal immigration database. They say further hearings are unnecessary because county clerks already have the power to handle challenges to voter registrations.

If Gessler's plan to hold hearings is approved by his office, people could start receiving a new round of letters as soon as next week notifying them that their citizenship is in doubt.

Deputy Secretary of State Suzanne Staiert said the goal is to keep accurate voter rolls, and that officials are working in the best interest of immigrants who may be unaware that they're breaking the law by being registered to vote or by voting.

"I understand that you think this is a very small percentage," she told opponents of the plan, "but for these people, this is their life."

Fitcation?A Health, Fitness, and Wellness Retreat for Women ...

Having traveled quite extensively this year, I can say without a doubt that it is on those trips where I am challenged to stick to my health and fitness goals.? It is too easy to skip my workouts and justify evening desserts.? As you can imagine, when I heard Leah Segedie from Mamavation was putting together a unique, health and fitness-focused vacation, I was intrigued.

The Pool at Four Seasons Westlake Village

Leah does a great job of explaining exactly what Fitcation is, but from my recent experience, I?ll say that it was a relaxing, enjoyable retreat where I spent some time learning about taking care of me?physically and emotionally and connecting with like-minded women. ? Each morning we worked out, which is a great way to start the day and a habit I wish I could continue (perhaps when our school routine is established next week since evening workouts just aren?t cutting it).? It felt really good to get that workout in and out of the way so I could enjoy the rest of the day.

Rather than go for a run, which is definitely a quick and easy way to get in a workout, we tried three different types of workouts.? Hoopnotica was fun and challenging but not impossible.? It was Steve from OC Fit Body that really challenged me to go a little bit further each and every time with my workouts.? He called his boot camp-style workout 50 Shades of Pain and he couldn?t have been further from the truth. I was sore for DAYS after that workout.? Fortunately, Kia from Bodhi Bear guided us through a restorative yoga session on Sunday morning.? I wish I could start every day with yoga that relaxing!? By the way, she is an amazing photographer?go check out her site!

Since fitness was a major part of this event, Leah ensured we were well equipped.? We tracked our steps with an Omron pedometer, protected our feet with New Balance shoes, and were well-supported thanks to Leading Lady Bras.

Marrakesh Studio City

We also ate some amazing food (perfect for my inner foodie!).? Our breakfasts were light and healthy which was perfectly balanced the amazing gourmet dinners we had (stay tuned for my review of Marrakesh which offers a unique Moroccan dining experience).

Because there were only 20 women included this year, I felt like I could get to know many of them personally.? New friendships were formed and established ones were strengthened, particularly with my roommate Lori from The Well Connected Mom.? Not only is she incredibly smart and tech-savvy, she is funny, compassionate, and genuine.? We had so much in common and I honestly could not have chosen a better roommate.

Dole Headquarters

Part of our experience included a day at Dole?s headquarters where we learned about some of their latest nutrition innovations, including two products I?m very excited about: Portobello Mushroom Powder (a fabulous source of Vitamin D) and Chia Seeds. I actually found it quite intriguing that Dole is moving in this direction and I?ll have an entire post highlighting what we learned, including some delicious recipes using the two new products.

On Saturday I played tourist in my hometown.? We started in Venice Beach, then drove through Santa Monica, up to Hollywood and into Beverly Hills.? I?ve never taken a tour of the stars? homes so it was actually quite interesting to learn a bit of LA history.

Four Seasons Westlake Village

Our home away from home was the glamorous and incredibly posh Four Seasons Westlake?Village.? I have a TON of photos and a full review coming which includes their innovative California Health and Longevity Institute.

Stay tuned for subsequent posts on our experience at Dole, our luxury stay at the Four Seasons, and our gourmet dining experience at Marrakesh.

Dole Headquarters

To read about the other attendees? experiences, just visit Mamavation, an online community of women supporting each other in their health and fitness goals.

No compensation was received for this post.? Fitcation was sponsored by Dole, Four Seasons Westlake?Village, the California Health and Longevity Institute, Sip the Good Life, New Balance, Subway and Leading Lady Bras. ?These sponsors provided lodging, meals, activities and product during the event.?

Obama administration hikes CAFE fuel economy standard to 54.5 mpg

Some people here are saying a prius, the symbol of new-gen electric technology, costs an arm and an leg at over 50k plus 10k for battery replacements. this is a complete lie.

i just went to toyota's site, it costs $18,950 for a basic model and maxing out at around 30k for fully loaded. not to mention you get government tax credits of around 5 - 8k for buying an hybrid or electric vehicle. this essentially means the base model will only cost you a little over 10k.

new battery packs in the prius costs between 2 - 3k every 8-10 years in replacement.

if you take the average, same class vehicle as prius (corolla, tercel, focus etc), which refuels at around $100 on average a month for most full time commuters, you will be spending around 12k in fuel costs alone within 10 years.

your total monthly electricity bill will rise about $20 / month on average if you drive around 1000 miles a month. that is around 2 cents / mile.

electric fuel is the future and no amount of taboo, myths or lies will derail the people from their prosperity and freedom away from oil slavery.

How to replace the battery in an iPhone 4S

How to replace the battery in an iPhone 4S

If the battery life in your iPhone 4S is getting worse and worse, or it just won't hold a charge, you can easily perform a DIY replacement. This can help you get lots more life out of your device and prevent having to buy a new iPhone before you absolutely have to. If you're soon to be out of warranty or otherwise not covered for exchange or replacement, or if you're just a DIY type who wants to learn more about the inner workings of your iPhone, we've got you covered.

Disclaimer: As with any repair, neither iMore nor PXLFIX can be held responsible for any damage you may do to your device. It?s also worth considering that opening up your device to perform any repair or modification can and will void your Apple warranty. If you don?t feel comfortable opening your device, don?t. Use extreme care and caution when performing a repair on any device.

What you'll need to DIY replace an iPhone 4S battery

PXLFIX recommends using only quality and genuine parts from a reputable supplier like eTech Parts. They have quality parts, tools, and much more for all your repair needs. You will find links to the specific parts you'll need for this repair in the list below.

Power off your iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S slide to power off

Before performing any repair you should always power off your device before opening it up.

Remove the back plate

  1. Using your security screwdriver, remove the 2 screws on either side of the dock connector port.
  2. iPhone 4S dock connector screws
  3. Set them aside. They are both the exact same size and length so it does not matter if you mix them up. They are interchangeable.
  4. Gently slide up the back plate by applying a bit of pressure along the bottom with your thumbs and sliding upwards.
  5. iPhone 4S remove back plate
  6. Now lift off the back plate and set it aside.
  7. iPhone 4S back removal

Remove the battery and grounding clip

  1. Using your #00 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the battery in place.
  2. iPhone 4S top battery screwiPhone 4S bottom battery screw
  3. These screws are different lengths so make sure you remember which one goes where. The one that is slightly larger is the bottom screw.
  4. There is a tiny grounding clip underneath the battery clip where the first screw is located. Use your spudger tool or finger to remove it before prying the clip up. Many times it can go flying if you don't remove it first and then you'll have difficulty locating it so it's best to remove it first.
  5. iPhone 4S grounding clip removaliPhone 4S grounding clip
  6. Now use your spudger tool and at the bottom of the battery clip, gently pry upwards so the clip pops up.
  7. iPhone 4S battery clip
  8. Move to the edge of the iPhone where the volume buttons are located and use your spudger tool to carefully pry up the battery. It is stuck down with a good amount of adhesive so be careful when prying upwards that you don't bend the battery. This is why I do not use the plastic tab that is provided. It typically rips or bends the battery. If one part is resistant move your pry tool a little further down and gently start prying it up in different places taking care not to come too close to the volume button cables towards the top.
  9. iPhone 4S battery removal
  10. Once you've gotten the battery pulled out of the iPhone 4S we can move on to inserting the replacement battery.

Replace the battery and grounding clip

  1. Pay attention to how the cable is bent on your old battery and if the new one is not crimped in the same fashion put the folds in it before inserting it into the iPhone 4S.
  2. iPhone 4S battery cable
  3. Line up the grounding clip you removed previously over the screw hole before snapping down the battery.
  4. iPhone 4S grounding clip position
  5. Snap down the battery in place to the logic board and then position the battery and press down firmly to make sure the adhesive sticks.
  6. Replace the two screws you removed in a prior step starting with the top one using your #00 Phillips screwdriver. Make sure the grounding clip stays positioned. Use your other hand to hold it straight while you replace the top screw if you need to.
  7. iPhone 4S top battery screw
  8. Now replace the bottom screw.
  9. iPhone 4S bottom battery screw

Replace the back plate

  1. To replace the back plate line up the hinges around the edges. It should fall right into place. There will be a gap at the bottom.
  2. iPhone 4S remove back plate
  3. Using slight pressure slide the cover down into place with your thumbs. If there is resistance make sure the hinges are lined up correctly and don't force it down and you can easily snap the hinge if it's caught up on something.
  4. Once the back cover is securely in place and flush with the antenna band, replace the two screws on either side of the dock connector using your security screwdriver.iPhone 4S dock connector screws

And ...done!

iPhone 4S power up

Now that your iPhone 4S is completely put back together you can turn it back on. If the phone doesn't come on, try plugging it into a wall charger and see if the charging icon comes up. It's quite possible the battery may be dead and needs to be charged before use.

It's a good idea to run the battery completely down before plugging it into a charger if it wasn't run down already. After it dies, charge it completely before pulling it off the charger again. You can do this a few times to condition the battery. While many say this may not be needed with batteries anymore, I have found it to make the battery meter read more accurately over time. You can actually do this at any time if you feel your battery is not displaying a charge accurately.

John Boehner's bad biz plan - The Term Sheet: Fortune's deals blog ...

FORTUNE -- House Speaker John Boehner addressed the party faithful here in Tampa this evening, telling a story about his old family business that was supposed to serve as a metaphor for President Obama.

Here was the gist:

"My dad and my uncles owned a bar outside of Cincinnati. I worked there growing up, mopping floors, waiting tables. Believe me when I say I learned how to deal with every character who walked in the door. So let's say right now, a guy walked into our bar and said, 'the private sector is doing fine.' Well, do you know what we'd do? That's right: we'd throw him out. ? If a guy walked into our bar ? and said, 'if you've got a business, you didn't build that,' do you know what we'd do? Throw him out."

Really Mr. Speaker? You'd throw out paying customers because you didn't agree with their economic assessments? That may be good politics (literally starve the opposition), but it doesn't strike me as terribly good business.

I once worked at a bar, and am pretty sure that I would have been fired for doing such a thing. And then the bar owner probably would have bought the guy one on the house.

Hopefully latter speakers, including Mitt Romney, are able to articulate a pro-business agenda that doesn't involve denying service to customers...

(AP) ? The U.N. chief jolted his Iranian hosts for a nonaligned nations meeting Wednesday by pointing out "serious concerns" in Tehran's human rights record and urging cooperation with the world body to improve freedoms.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had signaled he would not shy away from criticism of Iran during his visit to the Nonaligned Movement gathering in Tehran, but the sharp comments appeared to catch Iranian officials off guard just hours after his arrival.

"We have discussed how United Nations can work together with Iran to improve the human rights situation in Iran. We have our serious concerns on the human rights abuses and violations in this country," he told a news conference as he sat next to Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, who frowned at the remarks.

Iran's opposition groups had urged Ban to use his appearance in Tehran as a platform to criticize Iran's ruling system over its crackdowns on political dissent, including the house arrests of opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi.

While in Tehran, Ban also could raise sensitive issues such as demands by U.N. nuclear inspectors for wider access to various sites, including a military base near Tehran suspected of being a proving ground for explosives experiments that could be used to test nuclear triggers. Iran denies it seeks nuclear arms, but Western nations and allies fear Tehran's uranium enrichment labs are moving close to warhead-grade material.

In Vienna, the U.N.'s nuclear agency has created a special Iran Task Force of nuclear weapons experts, intelligence analysts and other specialists focused on probing Tehran's atomic program, according to an internal document shared with The Associated Press.

Iran is seeking to use the weeklong meeting of the 120-nation Nonaligned Movement to promote its position that its nuclear program is peaceful and its uranium enrichment is within the U.N. treaty rules. The meetings are capped by a two-day summit that begins Thursday.

In advance, Ban also said he will discuss the Syria crisis with Iranian leaders, who remain staunch allies of Bashar Assad's regime. The U.N. chief called Iran a major player capable of mediating in regional conflicts, including Syria's civil war.

"Iran has a very important role to play in helping resolve the Syrian issue, reflecting the will of the Syrian people in a peaceful manner. This is one of the important issues that I'm going to discuss with the Iranian leadership," said Ban.

Ban met Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad later Wednesday, state TV reported.

Iran plans to propose the formation of a three-member nonaligned team, plus two neighbors of Syria, to help resolve the crisis there, Iran's state media quoted prominent lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi as saying.

The proposed troika will include Egypt, Iran and Venezuela plus Iraq and Lebanon. Boroujerdi, who met Assad during a visit to Syria last week, said the Syrian president said he would welcome the Iranian plan.

A senior Iranian official gave details of the plan.

"Iran's proposal ... is a cease-fire and the implementation of a three-month mechanism for national reconciliation talks in this country," the official IRNA news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian as saying Wednesday.

Anti-regime fighters have dismissed any role for Iran in such a plan. The rebels and some others say it has little hope of succeeding. Also, the United States has rejected Iranian participation in international meetings on the Syrian crisis.

Is this deal destined to fail? - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Ah, the joys of life.? It is rare that everyone around us behaves the way we do.?? You are in a contract, you know the terms of the contract and the sellers are still following the terms.?

The agreed upon inspection period isn't over yet, and you are tearing your hair!?????? It is quite common for sellers to imagine the worst with buyers.?? It doesn't tend to help the situation to do so.????

Rather than be irritated that the buyers chose to take a vacation rather than cancel it and do a 10 day inspection period, think of it that they loved your house so much that they had to make an offer even when the timing was a bit inconvenient.? If you'd not agreed, you may still be waiting for an offer.

They don't get back to you tomorrow?? Then you have your answer. ? Ask your agent how their financing is going and if everything is moving forward properly.

Treat them the way you'd like to be treated.

Charmaine & Mark's Lovely, Lively Family Home House Tour ...

CMLead01.jpg

Name: Mark, Charmaine, Alexandra (8), Mateo (5) and Sabrina (19 months)
Location: New Berlin, Wisconsin
Size: 2,600 square feet
Years lived in: 3 years; owned

Three years ago, Charmaine and Mark wrote Apartment Therapy to ask readers' advice about painting the oak trim in their recently purchased home. The home had beautiful bones, but with all that wood, it was looking a bit too dated for their tastes. With their confidence boosted by the responses, Charmaine and Mark painted? and painted? and painted, turning it into the fresh, bright, and modern home that it is today.

CMThumbs.jpg

If you were to just look at photos of Mark and Charmaine's space, you would probably use descriptors like glamorous, sophisticated, and stylish, thanks to the glittering chandeliers, luxurious tufted furniture, and lucite and brass accents scattered throughout the home. White, lilac, turquoise, and pale pink hues give the home an airy, peaceful feeling, and Charmaine has a fantastic eye for classic pieces that she puts together in bold yet tasteful combinations. Every inch of the house feels well-considered and thoughtfully composed.

But to leave the assessment there would not begin to do the space justice. While stylish and refined, this family home is also very clearly lived in and loved. Charmaine and Mark have three sweet, precocious children, and the weekend that I visited, they were also hosting several visiting family members. The house was lively, bustling, and filled with glee, and as I moved from room to room, it became clear to me that Charmaine has decorated with utility first and foremost in her mind. The family loves to entertain, and the house is perfectly engineered to provide ample seating for visitors and numerous spaces where the kids can play. Pops of bright color, the use of durable materials, and plenty of storage solutions keep the space kid-friendly, while a variety of soft colors and lighting options make it a space suitable for a bit of relaxation once the kids have gone to bed.

What's more, they have created this thoughtful and stylish home frugally. Charmaine's blog My Best Friend Craig chronicles her budget-friendly home projects and affordable finds, and as you'll see in the source list below, most of the home's furnishings have been patiently and skillfully collected from thrift stores, consignment shops, and Craigslist. With a keen eye, some elbow grease, and some serious search string talent, Charmaine has managed to fill the house with charming, unique items that truly showcase the art of resourceful living.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: We like vintage mixed with new, traditional mixed with mid-century modern, and some Asian touches as well.

Inspiration: Design blogs, books, magazines and our travels. I am also inspired by Jonathan Adler, Tamara Kaye-Honey and Jamie Meares.

Favorite Element: Charmaine's favorite are the bathrooms (the kids' bath and the master bath were recently remodeled). Since we entertain a lot, Mark's favorite is the backyard. We have a decent size deck, a play set area for the kids, and a basketball court that he converts to an ice rink in the winter.

Biggest Challenge: Painting the 80s oak trim and kitchen cabinets white.

What Friends Say: "Your house is so comfortable; I feel right at home," and "I love what you did with your house. When can you help me with mine?"

Biggest Embarrassment: The upstairs hallway carpet needs to be replaced, and the hardwood floors need to be refinished.

Proudest DIY: The upholstered headboard in the master bedroom.

Biggest Indulgence: Remodeling our bathrooms.

Best Advice: Good design doesn't always equal expensive. It's all about balance. Try to mix high and low, new and old ? although I prefer vintage over new. It adds instant character and it's usually inexpensive, making it more kid-friendly. I've found so many great deals on Craigslist!

Bluetooth SIG releases certifications for fitness devices aimed at runners and cyclists

Fitness gadgets are great, but you never quite know what you're going to get when it comes to calorie counts, or a reading of how many miles you've run. That could change, though, thanks to a set of standards the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is adopting with regard to fitness devices. These two certifications, which apply to running and cycling gadgets, respectively, affect the way data (e.g., cadence, speed, distance) is transmitted to paired devices like smartphones, sports watches and cycling computers. As far as SIG is concerned, too, more standardization means OEMs will have an easier time bringing new products to market -- not that there's any current shortage of options to choose from.

Top tennis players have threatened to boycott Australian Open - Bettor

Top tennis players have threatened to boycott Australian Open ? Tennis News

There is a chance that most of the top players on the ATP World Tour would boycott the next Australian Open due to the prize money row.

Higher ranked players, who reach the latter stages at big tournaments, are fighting for their colleagues, whose rankings are not good and they fail to reach the second week of Grand Slams. The problem is that the organisers of Grand Slam have fixed huge prize money for players reaching latter stages but they pay quite less to the ones who lose in the first round.

It is being heard that Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which governs the men?s tennis, is even planning to organise an alternative event at the time of Australian Open.

Most of the top tennis players will gather for a meeting during the US Open to discuss this issue further and decide what to do. Roger Federer, who is the head of the ATP player?s council, is leading his fellows on this issue.

Former world number one, Andy Roddick, also thinks that tennis players are getting far less than the professionals from other sports. The American knows like everyone else that lower ranked players are not even getting even what they are investing.

Talking to the reporters in a recent interview, Roddick said, "Compare the percentage of revenue dedicated to prize money or salaries in tennis to other sports. At the majors our prize money is still in the teens, percentage wise, but the NBA is at a crossroads because the players earn 50% of revenue.?

He added, "I think we all feel very fortunate for what we get, but we are putting people in seats. The guys ranked 80 to 90 to 1,000 in the world aren't making the big bucks right now, and they're paying their own expenses, which you don't do on a professional sports team. That is who any action would benefit."

First round losers get least prize money at the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, compared to other Majors. Organisers at Melbourne Park paid just $20, 800 to the players who went down in the first match in 2012.
