Joey Fatone: ?I?ll Probably Miss Justin Timberlake?s Wedding? ? Exclusive

Posted on September 29th, 2012 at 9:17 am

True

Justin Timberlake is expected to get married to Jessica Biel at any minute, but one of his ?N Sync buddies may not be able to make the top secret nuptials, RumorFix is reporting exclusively.

PICTURES: Look Inside Justin Timberlake?s Manhattan Penthouse

We caught up with Joey Fatone at the premiere of Batman Live! at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday and he said, ?I probably will not be able to [attend the wedding] because of Dancing with the Stars.?

The 35-year-old, who says he was surprised to be asked on the All-Star edition of the dance competition, says he hasn?t been notified of a date or location for the wedding yet.

Rumors had been circulating that JT was getting married in Jackson Hole, Wyoming in August, but that didn?t happen. ?That?s the thing,? Joey tells us, ?We don?t even know where the heck it is.?

Wedding observers speculate the ceremony is days away, because Justin just had his two-part bachelor party in Las Vegas and Mexico a week ago.

Sony to spend $640M for 11% stake in Olympus

Tokyo, 29 September 2012 (MIA) - Sony is expanding its sprawling electronics-to-movies business empire with a new venture -- looking inside the human body.

The company on Friday said it will spend 50 billion yen ($640 million) for an 11 percent stake in Olympus Corp., an embattled maker of endoscopes, which are the long thin camera-equipped instruments that allow medical professionals to peer inside the body.

The deal was widely expected as Sony president Kazuo Hirai had expressed interest in moving into the medical equipment business.

Olympus Corp. is the world's biggest maker of endoscopes and is also known for its cameras. It has been on shaky ground after its British chief executive Michael Woodford turned whistleblower and helped unearth a scandal involving a systematic cover-up of massive losses.

Sony Corp. has its own problems and is hoping new businesses will be part of its turnaround. Sony has reported losses for four straight years as it fell behind in portable music players, flat-panel TVs and smartphones. Sony's red ink for the latest fiscal year through March was the worst in its 66-year history.

The two companies said they will set up a new medical equipment company together later this year, 51 percent owned by Sony and the rest by Olympus, AP reports.

The alliance between Sony and Olympus will focus on the camera business as well, and both sides can benefit from sharing their technology, and working together to become more competitive, they said. In such alliances, companies can share in procurement on parts, boosting their bargaining power with suppliers and lowering costs.

"I will do my best to make this meaningful and profitable for both Olympus and Sony," Hirai said in a statement. Sony will become the biggest shareholder in Olympus after acquiring the 11 percent stake.

Olympus President Hiroyuki Sasa said working with Sony will help shore up Olympus' finances, and that its endoscope business would benefit from Sony's image-sensor technology.

Sasa and Hirai plan a joint news conference Monday morning in Tokyo, where they will likely face questions about how two troubled Japanese companies getting together might lead to them competing more successfully on the global stage.

Earlier this week, Sasa was at the Tokyo District Court to enter a guilty plea for Olympus, along with three former executives who faced charges as individuals, in the opening session of a trial into the fraudulent financial reports.

Olympus has said it hid 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating to the 1990s.

Prosecutors outlined in detail the elaborate schemes concocted over the years, using overseas bank accounts, paper companies and transactions controlled behind-the-scenes, all to keep massive losses off the company books. lk/12:13

Chez Cayenne: The Bye and Bye (a copycat drink recipe)

The Bye and Bye is a cute little tavern in Portland, Oregon with a short menu of delicious vegan food. We ate there this summer when we were visiting family.

To go with my meatball sandwich, I ordered the house signature drink, the Bye and Bye.? The bartender filled a mason jar with ice, added a couple of shots of liquor, some juice, and a squirt of something from the soda gun. I loved it. The drink is fruity, but not cloyingly sweet. When I finished it, I decided that I wanted to make them at home.

When I got home, I couldn't find a recipe for a Bye and Bye, so I had to get creative. The menu said it contained peach infused bourbon and vodka. I don't have flavor-infused liquors, usually, and didn't want to buy any, so I used regular bourbon and vodka and some peach schnapps. Then I had to figure out the juice. I tasted cranberry juice and guessed that the soda was ginger ale.

I mixed it all up, and it tasted right, but the color wasn't pink enough. I tried adding some pomegranate molasses. Whoops, my drink was now brown. I thought about using some grenadine, but then I remembered that we used to make pink lemonade with grape juice when I was a kid, so I added some grape juice concentrate. Pinkness was achieved.

I've been drinking these the weekend ever since. This is a great drink anytime, but it's especially nice right now as the last heavy days of late summer ease into the crispness of fall.

Disclaimer: I only had one of these and I'm working from memory, so I might not have the juice ingredients exactly right (the liberties I took with the liquor was on purpose), and the color of mine is a little deeper than the original, as I recall. The flavor is spot on, I believe. But if you've had this drink and have any suggestions as to how I can make it closer to the original, leave me a comment!

A Pitcher of Bye and Byes

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons vodka (3 ounces)

1/4 cup bourbon (2 ounces)

1/4 cup peach liqueur (2 ounces)

1 cup ginger ale

2 cups cranberry juice

2 tablespoons? purple grape juice concentrate (or 1/2 cup grape juice)

Mix all ingredients in a 1 quart pitcher. Pour over ice into 4 juice glasses or 2 large mason jars.

Makes 2 tavern-sized drinks or 4 regular ones.

Family Moves Forward After Losing Everything in House Fire

Days after a Brazos County home burned to the ground, a single mother of three is trying to pick up the pieces.

?Right now I don't even have a job, I'm trying to find a job somewhere,? said Tranika Montgomery.

Montgomery says she doesn?t have home insurance either.

Montgomery says she's staying positive because she knows things can be replaced. The problem is finding a way to replace everything.

?My kids bedroom sets, my bedroom set, the clothes, tooth brushes, spoons...everything you have in a house to live to make it a home...we no longer have that anymore,? said Montgomery.

That's why people across Brazos County are stepping up to help.

?I've never been through a fire but I've been through eviction so I know the struggle. I couldn't do anything but help,? said Raquel Masco, Executive Director of the Single Moms Created for Change Organization.

There was a steady flow of people dropping by to drop off donations Thursday afternoon.

?Just odds and ends, little tea sets, so the little one has something to play with instead of worrying about what she lost,? said Skip Dent, a generous Bryan resident. ?They lost things instead of each other, and that?s the important thing.

Montgomery says she isn't worried because of all the love and support she's received from friends, family and strangers.

Anyone who would like to donate money to the family can go to any Wells Fargo Bank branch. There is a fund for the family listed under ?Tranika Montgomery?.

For anyone who wishes to donate clothing:

Tips for downloading the right antivirus software

A recent study by the Anti-Phishing Working group found that many companies do not have adequate website security.

"Victims are not taking measures to secure their sites from attack, and they remain lax in monitoring against and mitigating attacks," said ICANN's Dave Piscitello.

According to the report, more than 80 percent of security breaches to company websites are discovered by third parties rather than IT workers at the organizations themselves. A quarter of respondents admitted to not knowing how long phishing pages remained active on their websites.

The recent surge of cloud computing, which makes more sensitive data available on the web, means choosing the correct security programs is as imperative as ever. Here are some key factors companies should consider:

Identify security threats
There are six types of common cyber threats, according to Technology Snip: malware, spyware, Trojans, viruses and worms. They all use different strategies to target different types of data, so it is important for companies to identify what information is most valuable and vulnerable to an attack.

Companies should then determine the level of data protection that would be adequate. If it feels everything in its server is sensitive information (a bank, for instance, would want to protect all of its data), then it may need to use a more powerful antivirus system. There are also programs aimed at specific problems. A Trojan Horse, according to the news source, tries to steal specific information, so companies worried about data protection can download programs designed to fight that threat.

Cloud-based programs
AnchoFree CEO David Gorodyansky blogged for Inc.com about how the cloud is affecting cyber security. He said companies need to consider what applications are available online from anywhere, and whether employees are using personal devices - which tend to be less protected - to access those programs. Gorodynansky cautioned companies against making programs with highly important data accessible outside the office.

ABI Research: LTE subscriptions surpassed WiMAX usage in Q2 2012

WiMAX isn't exactly a fading technology, but LTE is more and more the name of the mobile connectivity game -- at least in Japan, South Korea and the US. That's what ABI Research gleaned from its "4G Subscribers, Devices and Networks" market data: according to the study the number of LTE subscribers in Japan, South Korea and the US shot past that of WiMAX users in the last quarter of 2011 through to quarter two of 2012. The firm says 77 percent of LTE devices were smartphones in 2011, and it projects that LTE handsets will make up more than 80 percent of device shipments in 2016. ABI says LTE's advantage will grow in the next few years, as more mobile operators roll out TD-LTE networks, and as we begin to see more LTE chipsets hit the market. Head past the break for the press release.

An Online Business Is Just Like A Standard ... - Naraywal Branding

September 26th, 2012 by ramboseo1971, under . No Comments

By far the most common misguided beliefs about working online is that you do not need to pay any taxes. In fact you?re going to find that this is something which is believed by many men and women, when you work from home you do not pay taxes. One reason many men and women are becoming attracted to a business online is because they think taxes are excluded. For people who are looking to start an online business you should comprehend that taxes aren?t the only thing you are going to need to pay, you are going to also have to take care of any special licenses that are required where you live. When you learn all that you will need to have, plus how much tax you have to pay, having a work from home business might not seem so fun anymore. We browse the suggestions from Stansberry & Associates Invesment Research in my enterprise decisions.

Because a lot of the people who want an internet business haven?t owned a business of any kind, they have no idea what it means to be self employed or own a business. I?m certain you realize that when people don?t have any experience in running a business a lot of them will automatically believe whatever they hear, like not having to pay taxes on a web based business. Whether you have a traditional business, or if you?re running an online business, taxes are something that are going to have to be paid any time you make a profit. By far the most common reasons that individuals end up not paying taxes is because they honestly believe they do not need to pay taxes when they are running a business at home.

Given that most folks work at a job where the taxes are withheld automatically, they have no idea what a business does when it comes to taxes. The amount of taxes you are going to need to pay is a thing that is going to be according to the amount of money you bring in and has nothing to do with where you are located. It is going to be vitally important for you to make sure that you?re paying your taxes whenever you are earning a profit because this is required by law. Even if you are running your business completely by yourself, you still are a sole proprietor and must register your business, and pay your taxes every year. Running a business isn?t going to be a thing that is easy for many folks because they have not had any type of experience with all the tax stuff that they have to know.

When it comes to filing your Federal taxes there are going to be different procedures which are going to need to be followed based on whether you are running the business yourself being a sole proprietor, or if your company is incorporated. You are going to discover that Medicare taxes as well as a self employment tax are something which you are going to end up filing if you are a sole proprietor. Of course men and women who are registered as a corporation are going to wind up filing their taxes a lot differently. It is going to depend on your organization, whether the tax is paid within the corporate level, or is passed down as income. Check out this Stansberry article to understand more about small business.

You need to also realize that every state will have different tax laws, and because of this we suggest everybody talks to an accountant in your state. As long as you do not mind the extra work that is going to be required, and as long as you do your research on all the laws in your area, an online business may be a good idea.

Staging your house means not just cleaning the surroundings and repairing what has to be fixed. It does more in enhancing your property and creating the right mood for higher chances of selling. Home staging improves the quality of your house through style, ambience, and overall impact on potential home buyers. The ultimate goal of home staging is to make buyers realize that this is exactly the property they are looking for and they must have it as soon as they possibly can.

How much does it cost?

Most home owners opted for do-it-yourself alternatives for staging their homes, which is in one point a good way of making use of their creative juices and passion for home improvement. However, home staging is an art that needs intensive training and substantial background to perfect. Therefore, it is still advisable to seek help from professional home stagers who knows exactly what to do and are experts in their field. Prices depend mainly on the location of the property and the demand for home staging professionals in your locale. In fact, some real estate agents are themselves capable of home staging to make sure that the house they are helping to sell will be successfully marketed and sold in no time at all.

What to do in staging your house?

Here are some of the examples of the things that are usually done during the process of staging your house in preparation for selling.

  • Arranging your furniture and using accents to emphasize their value and effects is very important. You may use accessories such as drape window coverings with ribbons, bookshelves and fireplace mantels and even large bowls to decorate on top of your center table to add more color and attraction.
  • Staging your backyard is also possible by means of accentuating your decks and patios with flowers and potted plants. You may also add patio and picnic tables for more exciting effects.

Home staging offers more than just the possibility of selling your house effectively and quickly. It adds contentment and satisfaction knowing that you are investing on something worthwhile and with promising results.

Oil extends losses as economy pessimism persists

LONDON (AP) ? The price of oil fell below $91 a barrel Wednesday, tracking stock markets which dropped on renewed pessimism about the outlook for economic growth.

Benchmark crude was down 59 cents to $90.78 a barrel by midmorning London time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 56 cents to settle at $91.37 a barrel Tuesday in New York.

Oil failed to get a lasting boost from an improvement in U.S. consumer confidence to its highest level since February. Markets were overshadowed by comments from Charles Plosser, president of the U.S. Federal Reserve's Philadelphia branch, indicating that the Fed's efforts to support the world's biggest economy would likely fall short of its goals.

The comments reinforced the current pessimism about growth prospects and dragged down stocks on Wall Street and then Asia. Disappointing news out Europe and Spain Wednesday also weighed on investors.

The Commodity Research Team at Commerzbank said in a briefing that "the renewed escalation of the debt crisis in the eurozone, with violent protests in Spain against the planned new austerity measures, has sparked gloomier sentiment on the financial markets once again and is also putting oil prices under pressure."

Benchmark crude has fallen from near $100 since the middle of last month. Energy prices tend to fall when growth is slow because of lower demand. The U.S. economy is growing slowly. China's export-driven economy has cooled off, largely due to Europe's problems.

Brent crude was down $1.06 cents at $109.39 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London. In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange heating oil was down 2 cents at $3.09 a gallon, wholesale gasoline gained 3 cents to $2.82 a gallon while natural gas gained 2 cents to $3.12 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Artificially intelligent game bots pass the Turing test on Turing's centenary

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? An artificially intelligent virtual gamer created by computer scientists at The University of Texas at Austin has won the BotPrize by convincing a panel of judges that it was more human-like than half the humans it competed against.

The competition was sponsored by 2K Games and was set inside the virtual world of "Unreal Tournament 2004," a first-person shooter video game. The winners were announced this month at the IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games.

"The idea is to evaluate how we can make game bots, which are nonplayer characters (NPCs) controlled by AI algorithms, appear as human as possible," said Risto Miikkulainen, professor of computer science in the College of Natural Sciences. Miikkulainen created the bot, called the UT^2 game bot, with doctoral students Jacob Schrum and Igor Karpov.

The bots face off in a tournament against one another and about an equal number of humans, with each player trying to score points by eliminating its opponents. Each player also has a "judging gun" in addition to its usual complement of weapons. That gun is used to tag opponents as human or bot.

The bot that is scored as most human-like by the human judges is named the winner. UT^2, which won a warm-up competition last month, shared the honors with MirrorBot, which was programmed by Romanian computer scientist Mihai Polceanu.

The winning bots both achieved a humanness rating of 52 percent. Human players received an average humanness rating of only 40 percent. The two winning teams will split the $7,000 first prize.

The victory comes 100 years after the birth of mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing, whose "Turing test" stands as one of the foundational definitions of what constitutes true machine intelligence. Turing argued that we will never be able to see inside a machine's hypothetical consciousness, so the best measure of machine sentience is whether it can fool us into believing it is human.

"When this 'Turing test for game bots' competition was started, the goal was 50 percent humanness," said Miikkulainen. "It took us five years to get there, but that level was finally reached last week, and it's not a fluke."

The complex gameplay and 3-D environments of "Unreal Tournament 2004" require that bots mimic humans in a number of ways, including moving around in 3-D space, engaging in chaotic combat against multiple opponents and reasoning about the best strategy at any given point in the game. Even displays of distinctively human irrational behavior can, in some cases, be emulated.

"People tend to tenaciously pursue specific opponents without regard for optimality," said Schrum. "When humans have a grudge, they'll chase after an enemy even when it's not in their interests. We can mimic that behavior."

In order to most convincingly mimic as much of the range of human behavior as possible, the team takes a two-pronged approach. Some behavior is modeled directly on previously observed human behavior, while the central battle behaviors are developed through a process called neuroevolution, which runs artificially intelligent neural networks through a survival-of-the-fittest gauntlet that is modeled on the biological process of evolution.

Networks that thrive in a given environment are kept, and the less fit are thrown away. The holes in the population are filled by copies of the fit ones and by their "offspring," which are created by randomly modifying (mutating) the survivors. The simulation is run for as many generations as are necessary for networks to emerge that have evolved the desired behavior.

"In the case of the BotPrize," said Schrum, "a great deal of the challenge is in defining what 'human-like' is, and then setting constraints upon the neural networks so that they evolve toward that behavior.

"If we just set the goal as eliminating one's enemies, a bot will evolve toward having perfect aim, which is not very human-like. So we impose constraints on the bot's aim, such that rapid movements and long distances decrease accuracy. By evolving for good performance under such behavioral constraints, the bot's skill is optimized within human limitations, resulting in behavior that is good but still human-like."

Miikkulainen said that methods developed for the BotPrize competition should eventually be useful not just in developing games that are more entertaining, but also in creating virtual training environments that are more realistic, and even in building robots that interact with humans in more pleasant and effective ways.

US, Egypt seek better ties after embassy protests

NEW YORK (AP) ? The United States and Egypt sought Monday to repair ties strained severely by a year-and-a-half of rapid change in the Middle East, culminating in the last two weeks with Egyptian demonstrators overrunning the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and President Barack Obama candidly remarking that the two countries were now neither enemies nor allies.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke with Egypt's new Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, in a New York hotel on Monday night, the highest-level meeting between the once stalwart Middle East partners since an American-made video ridiculing Islam prompted violent Egyptian protests on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. American officials said their discussions sought to strengthen a relationship that both see as vital.

They particularly emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of diplomatic installations, said a senior U.S. official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the private meeting and requested anonymity. Morsi was criticized for his slow, initial response to the protests that ended with vandalism of the embassy and the American flag torn down, but the official stressed that U.S. officials see the Egyptian government's protection since as reassuring.

Morsi assured Clinton that embassy protection was "Egypt's duty," the official said.

The meeting occurred amid a jam-packed schedule for Clinton in New York, where she is attending this week's annual gathering of the U.N. General Assembly and speaking with a host of world leaders. Egyptian hopes of a maiden meeting between Morsi and Obama were dashed when the White House announced that the president would not be participating in bilateral meetings during his brief stay in the city. Obama arrived Monday and will leave Tuesday.

Shortly after the Cairo protests, Obama appeared to express his dismay with Egypt's handling of the situation. In an interview with Spanish-language network Telemundo, he said: "I don't think that we would consider them an ally, but we don't consider them an enemy."

The nature of the U.S.-Egyptian relationship wasn't under question in Clinton's meeting with Morsi, said the U.S. official, who said that officials for the two countries see relations as having have moved past the place they were only 12 days ago.

Clinton and Morsi also spoke about improving security in the Sinai Peninsula near Israel's border and helping the Egyptian economy, officials said.

Extremist activity has grown in the Sinai since last year's political upheaval, which ended with the ouster of longtime U.S. ally Hosni Mubarak. The volatile region, which links Egypt's borders with the Gaza Strip and Israel, has become increasingly lawless. In a brazen attack in August, unidentified militants killed 16 Egyptian soldiers.

Clinton stressed the need for Egypt to improve communications with its neighbor Israel, the official said.

The neighbors established a close counterterrorism partnership under Mubarak, but relations have dipped since. Members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood have expressed skepticism about the merits of Egypt's three-decade old peace treaty with Israel, and the Jewish state has viewed with great suspicion the political rise of Morsi and other hardline Islamists.

(Business) Success Is All In Your Mind - The Self Improvement Blog

By Jack Osborne -

I know a man who immigrated to America in the early 1980?s. He arrived poor and alone, with a tiny suitcase filled only with clothes and toiletries. He was asked by Immigration if he had anything to declare (for duty). He said, ?No,? and was allowed to pass.

This man was entering America to attend Stanford University on an academic scholarship. Upon graduation in Engineering, he yearned to be his own boss and he formed an electronics company in Silicon Valley. Thirteen years later he sold his company for over a billion dollars!

Another man, with whom I had the pleasure to work, arrived in America from Eastern Europe in 1957. He was similarly poor and had nothing to declare at Immigration. He became one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and today he is a billionaire.

Another gentleman who is a personal friend was born of immigrants, who also had nothing to declare when they arrived in America before WWII. He inherited his parents poverty, but also their ethics and intelligence. He worked hard to put himself through college and after graduation formed his own software company. His company was moderately successful and was then acquired by a larger software company.

Long story short, my friend became a key executive in the combined company. When he left a decade later to again pursue his own interests, he had $100 million in his pockets! My friend has since formed many of his own companies and has become one of America?s most successful businessmen and most active philanthropists.

Imagine each of these immigration scenes and their similarity. Poor people, with nothing noticeable step forward to face a pillar of authority, with all of the trappings of power ? starched uniform, badge across the heart, pistol at the side, sitting behind a large desk, asking what do you have of value? Nothing to declare! Nothing visible perhaps, but all of these gentlemen (and countless others like them) had assets of significant value ? it?s that these assets were ?smuggled? in, located within the small space between their ears, in their minds! The value that each possessed was in the uniqueness of their thinking, their intelligence, their mental drive, and their desire to become successful, all of which originate in and are driven from within the mind. And these all are critical attributes for success in any businesses.

I don?t mean to denigrate Immigration officers or other government servants, but these are people who are trained to find visible contraband. They are not trained to recognize real ? but invisible ? value that passes in front of them on a daily basis, hidden under tattered clothes and old suitcases. They can?t look into people?s minds, and even if they could, there are no laws to tax what they might find inside.

The point in the above stories is not to argue that you need to immigrate into America in order to achieve success and riches. The origination of your journey is unimportant. The point in each of the above cases is that you can begin from nothing and accomplish matters of great importance.

You see, at any point in your life it?s important to have a nest egg, it?s important to know people, and it?s important to work hard. All help contribute to success. But the single most important ingredient for you to succeed as a business owner or manager ? actually in anything you try ? is the asset you possess within your head, your mind!

It?s your mind, and the attitudes you create within it, that will allow you to resolve all of the problems and issues that will stand in your way. It?s your mind that will give you the passion and the will to go forward. It?s your mind that will create, recognize, and act upon all of the opportunities that come your way, when others around you don?t see them or don?t act. It?s your mindset for success that will allow you to achieve all of your dreams. It?s your mind that makes you special.

A well-known quote from Thomas Edison is, ?Success is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.? The 1% is what makes all of the difference between living an ordinary life, and achieving something of great significance. That 1% comes from your mind. All truly successful business owners recognize this!

Jack Osborne invites you to visit [http://PathsToProfits.com/blog/] and discover real-world tips and practical wisdom for becoming a successful entrepreneur or business owner/manager. You can download a free report on the top five mistakes made by owners of Internet businesses, or any businesses.

A Look At Crude Oil's Massive Dip

By Jared Cummans

Prior to this week, crude oil had been on a tear, as it had steadily been gaining ground for quite some time. Between May and September, the fossil fuel jumped up roughly 22%, as it had just gotten over a crushing blow that began in the beginning of 2012. But just as it looked like crude was making its way towards triple-digit figures, it got stopped in its tracks, as this commodity began tumbling this week. In just three days, this asset fell more than 7%, leaving many investors scratching their heads trying to figure out how it racked up such losses.

The trouble started Monday when crude quite suddenly shed nearly $4 in 15 minutes of trading, leaving investors to scramble and accelerate the selling pattern. Last week showed that U.S. crude stockpiles jumped by more than 8.5 million barrels, way over the predicted 1 million. But market euphoria from Ben Bernanke's QE3 announcement was able to push virtually every asset higher. Then came time for crude to fall. Monday's massive sell off started with one major trade of someone who simply decided to get out of the market. Right away stop-losses were triggered and things snowballed from there. If you blinked, you missed it, as the commodity took a swift nose dive.

But the hits kept coming, as traders and investors continue to worry about demand from the U.S., who is by far the largest consumer on an annual basis. With that in mind, crude endured two more rough days until it was finally able to muster up some gains during Thursday's session. As we enter the winter months and crude oil demand will likely draw back a bit, it would not be surprising to see this asset continue to struggle. The summer months are typically the best for crude oil as people are more willing to drive and gobble up the fossil fuel.

Of course, the recent conflicts in the Middle East certainly threaten to shake things up a bit. As tensions persist between the U.S. and some of the largest oil producers in the world, crude oil will likely remain extremely volatile. Investors will also want to keep a close eye on the Keystone XL Pipeline project and the upcoming elections, as each Presidential candidate has a different timeline for green-lighting the project. Once it is put into place, the massive oil flowing into the U.S. could have a significant impact on the price and trading of WTI.

Valmont Industries makes its mark across China

SHANGHAI ? If you want to see ways that a Nebraska company can make money from China's infrastructure spending boom, just look up.

At the decorative street lights lining a downtown Shanghai shopping street.

At the sturdy pairs of steel support poles, each as big around as a mature tree, holding up numerous electrical power lines.

At the thousands of symmetrical lights curving gently over miles of a new elevated highway near one of Shanghai's two modern airports.

Each of those poles has contributed to profits earned by Omaha-based Valmont Industries, which posted $148?million in sales last year in China. And as China continues to spend billions of dollars annually on massive infrastructure projects, Valmont officials are confident that they can sell lots of additional poles in the future.

?When you are not in the pole business, you never notice how many poles there are,? said Huang Xiao-yong, president of Valmont's China operation. ?But there are poles everywhere.?

Poles for lights, signs, power lines and cellphone towers accounted for a large share of Valmont's China sales, although the $148 million figure also includes the company's irrigation systems and metal handrails and walkways for industrial plants.

Valmont's business dovetails nicely with some of China's infrastructure spending, which includes highways, bridges, airports, deep-water shipping ports, subways, high-speed rail lines, power plants, hydroelectric dams, refineries, schools, electric power grids and cellphone networks.

?China has long been the world's largest investor in infrastructure, building roads sometimes even before the towns that they will eventually serve exist,? an International Monetary Fund report said this year.

The Chinese government began to accelerate infrastructure spending in 1998, said Shuanglin Lin, an economics professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. China needed to upgrade its transportation, communications and energy systems in order to make the country more modern and support its growing export business.

?The demand for infrastructure is high,? said Lin, who also heads the China Center for Public Finance at Peking University in Beijing.

In addition, he said, the spending has helped create jobs and keep the Chinese economy moving, even as the world economy has slumped.

For example, China this month approved more than 20 local infrastructure projects worth more than $150 billion to boost the economy. China's growth rate had dipped to 7.8 percent in the first half of 2012 ? low by recent Chinese standards, although it's much better than the U.S. economy.

Valmont is poised to take a slice of that spending, with five company-owned factories in China that serve the local market as well as other Asian nations and Australia.

While China sales alone accounted for a relatively small fraction of Valmont's total revenues of nearly $2.7 billion last year, the company's success there points to future opportunities elsewhere in the developing world.

In all, Valmont already does 45 percent of its business outside North America, up from 25 percent a few years ago.

?You look at the developing world and you see they need everything we produce,? said Terry McClain, senior vice president and chief financial officer at Valmont.

Valmont and its CEO, Mogens Bay, have worked with China for a long time.

In the 1970s, Bay was the China representative for the East Asiatic Co., a Danish firm involved in shipping, industry and trade. While there, he met Valmont founder Robert Daugherty, who had come to China to sell irrigation systems. Soon Bay joined the Nebraska company, eventually rising to the top position in 1993.

A few years later, Valmont built the first of its Chinese factories on the undeveloped outskirts of Shanghai. When the plant began producing poles in early 1996, there were no nearby businesses. Instead, there was a rice paddy across the street, and sometimes half of the roadway was covered with grain that the farmer had spread out to dry.

Sixteen years later, the Songjiang Industrial Area surrounding Valmont's factory is a microcosm of the changes that have turned China into the world's largest manufacturer. The former rice paddy now holds a factory for Pierre Cardin products. Nearby, there's a huge complex for a Taiwanese manufacturer of laptop computers, including enough worker dormitories to house a college full of students.

Initially, Valmont owned 70 percent of the Shanghai factory, where long steel plates are bent and welded into tubes. The remainder was held by Shanghai Steel Shaped Tubing Co., but the Nebraska company has since bought out its Chinese partner.

Valmont's factory differs from most of its neighbors because it isn't designed to use cheap labor to ship products back to the U.S. Nearly everything the plant makes is sold to customers in China or nearby countries.

The same is true of Valmont's other Chinese factories: two additional pole plants, another that makes irrigation pipe and related structures, and one that fashions metal ?access systems? such as ramps and catwalks. The latter factory was acquired in 2010 when Valmont bought Delta PLC.

Valmont has moved slowly in growing its business in China, McClain said.

?We go in and plant seeds,? he said, ?rather than make major bets.?

Occasionally, McClain said, Valmont doesn't have enough capacity in its U.S. plants to handle an order of utility poles destined for North America, so the company uses one of its Chinese factories to make some components for those poles and ship them to the U.S. for assembly. The alternative, he said, would be to refuse the entire order ? hurting job prospects in the U.S.

Meanwhile, he said, Valmont needs to have factories in China in order to make sales there, partly because the Chinese government often mandates locally made products. In addition, he said, it would be cost-prohibitive to ship heavy steel poles and irrigation pipes from, say, the Valmont factory in Valley, Neb., across the Pacific Ocean.

Some poles are about 10 feet in diameter and 250 feet high.

There's also an advantage to having company engineers based in China when they are determining the load requirements of poles for a specific location in China, McClain said.

?You have to be local to make the products,? he said. ?We just view Valmont as a global company. We have to be global.?

For irrigation systems, Valmont makes the pipe and steel structures in China for the Chinese market, but produces gearboxes and sophisticated controls in the U.S. That means irrigation pivot sales in China create some jobs in Nebraska, although Valmont officials were unable to estimate the number.

Similarly, Valmont said it could not quantify how many jobs in the company's Omaha headquarters can be attributed to pole manufacturing in China or other foreign countries. But McClain said there is obviously some impact.

?Whenever we get more sales in China, we create employment in the U.S.,? he said.

Valmont officials acknowledge that they face tough competition in the pole business from Chinese rivals. Huang, the company's China president, maintains that the company's products beat the competition because Valmont uses better quality steel, better galvanization and better engineering design. But that doesn't always win the contract.

Arnold Ursaner, a financial analyst who studies Valmont, said the company is most successful on major projects, such as the tallest utility poles installed in the trickiest locations.

?In China, Valmont does well on larger products with higher engineering content,? said Ursaner, president of CJS Securities in White Plains, N.Y. ?On smaller projects with less engineering, the markets are highly competitive.?

Valmont officials agreed with that assessment, noting that they typically win contracts based on their reputation for high quality poles that remain standing during hurricanes and other disasters.

In early 2008, Huang said, ice and snow storms wreaked havoc on some power transmission lines in the northern part of China, but no Valmont pole was damaged.

?We've never had a pole fall,? Huang said.

McClain said Valmont is mindful of the need to protect the company's intellectual property ? the technology that has been developed in the U.S. and may give Valmont products a market advantage.

China doesn't have an established track record on respecting intellectual property, he said. Nor are commercial contracts honored as much as they are in the U.S. legal system.

Those aren't insurmountable challenges, McClain said, but they are issues that the company must face.

?You have to make sure that's respected locally,? he said.

Valmont also could be affected if China's economy keeps slowing down, despite recent efforts by central and local governments to prime the economic pump with infrastructure spending.

Ursaner said any slowdown in China's economy could ripple across Asia, which also could affect Valmont operations in other countries in the region.

Lin, the UNO professor, said it's obvious that the extra Chinese government spending is needed to stimulate the economy, given lagging Chinese exports to Europe and the U.S. At the same time, he said, China is struggling with rising government debt to pay for the infrastructure work even as social welfare spending is going up.

?Debt is a problem,? he acknowledged.

Even so, Lin said, China has enough important infrastructure needs that high spending is likely to continue at least for another decade despite concerns about the debt burden.

McClain said Valmont should be able to find ample markets for products like power poles in China and throughout the developing world, because those nations still need to build electrical power systems.

About 1.6 billion people worldwide ? one out of five people ? have no electrical power at all and will be looking to obtain it eventually. And Valmont is poised to do its part.
