Tehran - Iran's top military commander on Saturday predicted its long-running dispute with Israel would eventually lead to war, ISNA news agency reported.

?The constant threats by the Zionists (Israel's) proves the regime's serious enmity with Iran which will eventually lead to a physical confrontation,? the commander of Iran's revolutionary guards, Mohammad-Ali Jafari, said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of the possibility of a pre-emptive Israeli strike against Iran's disputed nuclear programme, which it believes is aimed at giving the Islamic state a nuclear weapon.

Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for civilian ends, although has not granted the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, access to all sites and documentation it has requested.

The commander said that Iran had to reach its maximum military capability ?in case they (Israel) acted irrationally and launched an attack.?

?An attack would however be simultaneously their (Israel's) annihilation,? Jafari added.

He further said that ?the cancerous tumour Israel considers war as the only option to confront Iran, but we hope that their masters (US) would still stop these idiots? from launching an attack.

There has been pressure from Netanyahu, ahead of the US election in November, for President Barack Obama to impose clearer ?red lines? on what would trigger military action against Iran over its disputed nuclear programme. - Sapa-dpa
