TOKYO ? Japan's top diplomat says maintaining stable global oil prices is critical for imposing effective sanctions on Iran, saying that higher oil prices could benefit Iran and hurt the global economy.
Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Friday that the U.S.-proposed sanctions must be considered "carefully and wisely" during a joint news conference with French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe.
On Thursday, Finance Minister Jun Azumi said Japan would start reducing Iranian imports in support of the U.S. campaign. Japan obtains about 10 percent of its oil from Iran.
Gemba said his recent trip to the Mideast was made in anticipation of possible sanctions on Iran.
Juppe said he was doubtful the sanctions would have an adverse effect on global oil prices or the world economy.
