The dangers of asbestos to affect people as more and more individuals are diagnosed with illnesses after years of unknowingly inhaling the mineral and being exposed to asbestos in their work places.
Asbestos is a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Widely used in industrial products?cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation?asbestos has been leaving workers at risk for decades. When the tiny particles float in the air, particularly during manufacturing processes, they can be inhaled or swallowed, and can cause serious health problems.
Diseases that result from inhaling asbestos include lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, and pleural effusion, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Mesothelioma is one of the most common forms of cancer connected to asbestos and working with asbestos is the major risk in being diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70-80 percent of all mesothelioma cases.
The use of asbestos in the U.S is now heavily restricted. There are currently no treatments to reverse the effects of asbestos-related diseases.
